I’m also having trouble not sounding utterly redundant in filling out these various window prompts, so bear with me:
This book series started as a 'message in a bottle’ to various museums selected by my aunt before she killed herself during a schizophrenic episode:
it was the last will and testament of Virginia Vogel, (my aunt), that I find a way to exhibit her paintings and prints in the great museums of the world,
(no pressure).
My solution was to go to the various museums she requested, illustrate her artwork into those exhibition spaces, then have those books archived within the respective museums.
Part 2 of the book, “The Anatomy Of Various Digressions”, began as a wordless diary of my work of the time, as I struggled to process her death. In retrospect, I didn’t want her work to be alone, which was also the prevailing condition of her life. It serves as witness, and the completion of a promise we made to maske art to gather… some day.
Over time, Part 2 became a more existential question as to whether artwork could recombine into a story only seen in hindsight: a shadow narrative of my waking world, when words were in short supply, but feelings were everywhere.
Only after I received word that the book had made it in to SF MoMA’s collection, did I realize how affected I was by the process. This led to the formation of book 4…
